1870—1875

THE fringe has become definitely fashionable, and heavy, straight fringes are worn by boys and girls alike. Little boys are wearing their hair long again; it is extraordinary how, from time to time, we see boys with long curls, and in a few years’ time off they come—and none but the shorn are smart.

All sorts of skirts are seen during these years, each with some added material or trimming, in an endeavour to make up for the recently lost crinoline. Mostly they have over-skirts, frequently bundled up behind ; but we sec them quilted, heavily braided, and paniered, and, when nothing else avails, a large sash is tied at the back to add zest to the outline.

Every garment has plenty of braid and buttons. Bodices are higher at the throat and rarely have collars, the neck usually being finished with a tiny frill or just a braid binding. Sailor collars are often worn on coats, and a striped singlet is very smart.

Hats perch either forward over the eyes or on the top of the head ; they are still small, and often there is more decoration than hat. Small shoulder capes, sometimes made of fur, are worn over the coat, but the long cloak of a year or two ago has vanished. Muffs are a fashionable adjunct to the well-dressed child.
